Beneficiary farmers are our ambassadors – Diana Mukulu, Senior Agricultural Engineer Mukono district, focal person for UGIFT micro-scale irrigation

We start with reaching out to the farmers to inform them about the micro scale program and how they can benefi t… When they express interest, we visit their farms to carry out technical assessments. The assessment includes the technical ability of the farm to host a Micro Scale Irrigation program.

The areas of focus are water sources, land ownership, and the topography. We then study the farmer’s crop pattern, which helps us determine the appropriate system. We share the estimated cost of the equipment with the farmer to seek his consent.
The government provides a subsidy on the equipment that ranges between 25 – 75% of the total cost.
The total cost depends on farmer’s choice of equipment and the farm conditions like topography, acreage, etc.

We encourage farmers to always go for the renewable energy – solar system. Once the farmer makes their co-payment, the government then starts the process of installation of irrigation equipment on the farm.
We consider approved farmers our ambassadors and encourage them to promote the program in their communities through demonstrations on their farms. Additionally through the program, farmers receive extension services to help them sustainably utilize their received irrigation equipment to improve production, and productivity hence increased household income
